Badlands (formerly Mesa biomes) are arid, dry biomes characterized by colorful layers of terracotta in red, orange, yellow, white, and brown. They are among the most visually striking environments in Minecraft, named after real-world Badlands formations found in the American Southwest.
Unlike most biomes, Badlands never experience rainfall, meaning crops grow slowly without irrigation and lightning storms are rare. The temperature is permanently high (2.0), making it one of the warmest biomes in the game.
Some popular seeds known for great Badlands spawns:
Gold ore in Badlands generates between Y=-64 and Y=256 (since 1.18), with an additional distribution between Y=32 and Y=79 that doesn't exist in other biomes. You can find gold near the surface by digging into cliff faces.
Strip mining or cave diving within Badlands is most efficient — even shallow caves yield gold. Exposed mineshafts, far more common here, often contain minecart chests with gold ingots, golden apples, and golden horse armor.
Badlands provide an essentially unlimited supply of six natural stained terracotta colors plus unstained terracotta — perfect for desert-themed builds.
